Reader Questions:

Splitting Service Between Neurologist and ENT

Question: Our neurologist worked with an ENT to perform an EMG of the larynx. The ENT placed the needles, and the neurologist interpreted the test. How should I report this case? California Subscriber Answer: You should append modifiers to document which physician performed each part of the procedure. Because the ENT performed the technical portion of the procedure, his service would be 95865 (Needle electromyography; larynx) with modifier TC (Technical component) appended. Report the same procedure code for your neurologist, but append modifier 26 (Professional component) instead because he interpreted the results rather than performed the procedure.
