Incorporate This Implanon Advice

Question: My ob-gyn placed an Organon’s Implanon product. What code(s) should I report? Is 11981 the best option?

Answer: In a recent clarification between the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) and the CPT® Editorial Panel, it was decided that Implanon insertion should be reported with 11981 (Insertion, non-biodegradable drug delivery implant. The previous code 11975 (Insertion, implantable contraceptive capsules) was deleted from CPT® in 2012, and there is a note following code 11971 which directs you to report 11981 for the insertion of non-biodegradable drug delivery implant for contraception.

The Implanon product is reported with J7307 Etonogestral [contraceptive] implant system, including implants and supplies). This product consists of a single-rod implantable contraceptive that is effective up to three years.

Be sure to include V25.5 (Insertion of implantable subdermal contraceptive) for your diagnosis.

ICD-10: When your diagnosis coding changes, you should report Z30.49 (Encounter for surveillance of other contraceptives) instead.
