Ob-Gyn Coding Alert

Reader Question:

LUNA

Question: My physician did a laparoscopy with excision of endometriosis and a laparoscopic uterosacral nerve ablation (LUNA) procedure. How do we code a LUNA procedure?

Georgia Subscriber

Answer: The LUNA is best coded by adding modifier -22 (unusual procedural services) to the primary procedure. But keep in mind that this procedure will never have a separate procedure code, because it is considered investigational and does not cure pelvic pain in the long run, so many payers will not reimburse for it at all.
