Superficial Laceration With DaVinci Hysterectomy? Do This

Question: The provider did a DaVinci total hysterectomy with bilateral salpingectomy and repair of superficial vaginal laceration. Would code 57200 be the best code to use for the superficial vaginal laceration in conjunction to 58573 (Laparoscopy, surgical, with total hysterectomy, for uterus greater than 250 g; with removal of tube(s) and/or ovary(s)) for the hysterectomy bilateral salpingectomy?

Answer: While code 57200 (Colporrhaphy, suture of injury of vagina (nonobstetrical)) can be used for an injury to the vagina, it should not be reported separately if the laceration was caused by the surgeon while doing to hysterectomy (such as when applying instruments used to manipulate the uterus during the surgery).  The documentation would need to verify that the laceration was present prior to the hysterectomy to be considered for additional reimbursement.
