Reader Question:

Vulvoplasty

Question: Is there a CPT code for vulvoplasty or labial reduction? The diagnosis is enlarged labia and vaginal pain. Ohio Subscriber Answer: There is no specific code for this surgery, but there are two possible options. One is to code for removal of excessive skin using 15839 (Excision, excessive skin and subcutaneous tissue [including lipectomy]; other area). A second possibility, but one that the payer may interpret differently and deny, is a partial simple vulvectomy 56620 (Vulvectomy simple; partial) because the labia are part of the vulva. Some payers may decide that this code should only be used when lesions are involved, while others may accept it for excessive labial skin.
