Question: When doing the Dx coding for postpartum (PP) hospital care, should we still use codes from chapter 15, or do we go back to using regular codes? Is Z39.0 appropriate the day after delivery? Pennsylvania Subscriber Answer: Does the patient have some complication or problem that the ob-gyn is addressing during the PP hospital visit? If not, then use Z39.0 (Encounter for care and examination of mother immediately after delivery) after the delivery. Suppose the patient has PP hypertension. In that case, you should use a Chapter 15 code rather than Z39.0, which implies the mother has no complications at all.
