Reader Questions:

Paratubal Cyst Not Equal to an Ovary

Question: I found two different codes, 58661 and  58662, for paratubal cyst done laparoscopically. Which one would be the correct code?

Answer: You should use 58662 (Laparoscopy, surgical; with fulguration or excision of lesions of the ovary, pelvic viscera, or peritoneal surface by any method), not 58661 (Laparoscopy, surgical; with removal of adnexal structures [partial or total oophorectomy and/or salpingectomy]).

Removal of a paratubal cyst is not the same thing as removing an ovary or fallopian tube. If your ob-gyn documents removal of part of the ovary along with the cyst, however, you would report 58661 instead.
