Oncology & Hematology Coding Alert

Reader Question:

Take Your Pick: 90780 or 90784?

Question: The oncologist provides a pre-chemo drug administration for nausea and vomiting. The nurse injects the drugs into an IV that runs with saline. Should I report 90780 and 90784?

South Dakota Subscriber Answer: Because the National Correct Coding Initiative edits bundle 90780 (Intravenous infusion for therapy/diagnosis, administered by physician or under direct supervision of physician; up to one hour) and 90784 (Therapeutic, prophylactic or diagnostic injection [specify material injected]; intravenous), you cannot report these codes together. You also can't use a modifier to unbundle the codes.
