Ophthalmology and Optometry Coding Alert

ICD-9 2006 Reminder:

Start Using New Nonproliferative DR Diagnosis Codes Soon

Distinguish among mild, moderate or severe retinopathy beginning Oct. 1

Even though the calendar will still say 2005, when you turn to the October page it will be 2006 as far as your diagnosis codes are concerned. Oct. 1 is the first date of service to report codes from ICD-9 2006.

What this means: On Oct. 1, you'll have five new ICD-9 codes in the 362.0 series (Diabetic retinopathy). You'll be able to code the severity of nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy (DR) with these codes:

• 362.03--Nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy NOS

• 362.04--Mild nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy

• 362.05--Moderate nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy

• 362.06--Severe nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy

• 362.07--Diabetic macular edema. Learn more: For more information, see "Report Severity of Nonproliferative DR With New Diagnosis Codes" in the June 2005 Ophthalmology Coding Alert.
