TCI Posts Hearing-Aid V-Code Chart

Question: I enjoyed the July 2004 Otolaryngology Coding Alert article "Debunk This Hearing Aid Coding Myth" and was very interested in downloading Minnesota Medicaid's list of hearing-aid model numbers with corresponding V codes. But when I went to the Web site indicated in the article, I received a message that the site had changed, and I couldn't find the list. Is there a new address?

Answer: You are correct. The Minnesota Department of Health Web site no longer contains the hearing-aid V-code list.

The Coding Institute, however, has posted the chart on its Web site. To download the Adobe Acrobat pdf file, go to www.osslogin.com/docs and in the document number field enter "47."

Use the chart as a reference to find a hearing-aid model's V code.

For instance, an audiologist issues a hearing- impaired Medicaid patient two Phonak low-profile LP 9100 AF with directional microphone hearing aids. When you locate this model on the chart, you see you should report the model with V5050 (Hearing aid, monaural, in the ear) or V5130 (Binaural, in the ear). Because the audiologist prescribed two hearing aids (binaural), not one (monaural), assign V5130.
