Reader Question:

Peak Flow Test

Question: What is the correct CPT Code for a peak flow test before and after nebulizer treatments? We have been using 94150 (vital capacity, total [separate procedure]) but some other practices use 94010 (spirometry, including graphic record, total and timed vital capacity, expiratory flow rate measurement[s], with or without maximal voluntary ventilation). Which is correct?

Answer: Neither. There is no code for the type of peak flow test commonly done in pediatric offices. The codes referred to by the reader refer to computerized spirometry more commonly done in an allergists office. When using the handheld peak flow meter, simply include this as one of the tests performed as one element of the medical decision-making in choosing your evaluation and management services code.
