NEWS BRIEFS:

Got NPWT Devices? Gear Up for Coding Changes

If your practice or facility administers negative pressure wound therapy, watch for upcoming HCPCS code changes. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services has partnered with the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality to commission a review of NPWT devices, according to a Jan. 6 e-mail notice from CMS.

CMS will use this review to assess whether existing HCPCS codes adequately represent the technology and comparative benefits of these devices.

The agencies will review all available literature on the topic and solicit feedback from all interested stakeholders for clinical evidence regarding clinical outcomes associated with NPWT devices. "We are particularly interested in those well-conducted clinical trials that describe the comparative benefits of these devices," CMS said.

CMS requested stakeholders provide their information to AHRQ by Feb. 6, 2009. Commenters should refer to www.ahrq.gov/clinic/ta/npwtrequest.htm.
