Report 28003 for Multiple Bursal Spaces

Question: The provider made an incision in the patient’s skin and the fascia in his right foot to expose an infection. He removed the infected tissue and drained the fluid from multiple infected bursal spaces. Which CPT® code should we report for this procedure?

Texas Subscriber

Answer: You should report 28003 (Incision and drainage below fascia, with or without tendon sheath involvement, foot; multiple areas) for this procedure.

Bursa defined: A bursa is a fluid-filled sac that lies between the muscle, tendon, and bones.

Don’t miss: You should report 28002 (Incision and drainage below fascia, with or without tendon sheath involvement, foot; single bursal space) when the podiatrist performs the incision and drainage below the fascia of the foot involving a single bursal space.
