Reader Question:

Filing a Medical Board Complaint for Drunk Physician

Question: I'm a practice manager, and I'm concerned that one of the physicians is coming to work intoxicated. How do I file a complaint so he's investigated by the licensing board?

Oregon Subscriber

Answer: Anyone wishing to file a complaint against a physician should contact their state's medical board. You can find current information for all states' medical boards through this list: http://www.fsmb.org/policy/contacts#b13.

Oregon has particular laws for substance abuse by health professionals, including a Health Professionals' Services Program, which was established in 2010 to "assist health care providers with substance use or mental health disorders so they may continue to safely serve the people of Oregon," according to the Oregon Medical Board website.

The Oregon Health Professionals' Services Program accepts self-referrals by licensees or the board can refer a licensee, the website says. You can find more information about Oregon's specific program here: http://www.oregon.gov/omb/Topics-of-Interest/Pages/Health-Professionals'-Services-Program.aspx.
