Radiology Coding Alert

READER QUESTIONS:

Absorb This DXA Information

Question: Am I allowed to report DEXA codes 76075 and 76076 together?

Illinois Subscriber Answer: You may report them together - and be sure to take note that as of  Jan. 1, 2005, these are now known as DXA codes.

Codes 76075 (Dual energy x-ray absorptiometry [DXA], bone density study, one or more sites; axial skeleton [e.g., hips, pelvis, spine]) and 76076 (... appendicular skeleton [peripheral] [e.g., radius, wrist, heel]) cover different procedures, so it's OK  to report them at the same time.

Warning: Be certain that both services are ordered, medically necessary, and documented before you code.  - The answers for You Be the Coder and Reader Questions were reviewed by Cindy C. Parman, CPC, CPC-H, RCC, co-owner of Coding Strategies Inc. in Powder Springs, Ga.; and Gary S. Dorfman, MD, FACR, FSIR.
