Phimosis and Paraphimosis Defined

Phimosis is a tight foreskin with a constriction of the preputial orifice causing an inability of the prepuce to be drawn back over the glans penis. This leads to accumulation of secretion, infection and sometimes cancer of the penis. Paraphimosis is a retraction of the foreskin behind the glans penis. The retracted foreskin produces a constriction ring at the corona causing swelling, pain, distal penile ischemia and in severe cases necrosis. Paraphimosis may represent a surgical emergency.
