Reader Question:

Capture Ureterocele Incision with 52300

Question: Our urologist performed an anesthetic cystoscopy with incision of a left ureterocele, removal of distal ureteral calculus, and placement of a left indwelling stent. We cannot agree on how to report the procedure. Can you help?

Answer: Start by reporting 52352 (Cystourethroscopy, with ureteroscopy and/or pyeloscopy; with removal or manipulation of calculus [ureteral catheterization is included]) if the stone is removed ureteroscopically or 52320 (Cystourethroscopy [including ureteral catheterization]; with removal of ureteral calculus) if the stone is removed cystoscopically from within the opened ureterocele using a stone basket or grasping instrument.

You should also report 52300 (Cystourethroscopy; with resection or fulguration of orthotopic ureterocele[s], unilateral or bilateral) for the incision of the ureterocele and 52332 (Cystourethroscopy, with insertion of ureteral stent (eg, Gibbons or double –J type) for placement of the ureteral stent.
