Reader Question:

Cystourethroscopy after Consultation

Question: How should I bill for CPT 52310 and CPT 52332 performed on an outpatient basis three days after 99252 and 99231? Should I also bill the E/M services?

California Subscriber

Answer: Codes 52310 (Cystourethroscopy, with removal of foreign body, calculus, or ureteral stent from urethra or bladder [separate procedure]; simple) and 52332 (Cystourethroscopy, with insertion of indwelling ureteral stent [e.g., Gibbons or double-J type]) are zero-day global procedures, so the consultation (99252) and the visit in the hospital (99231) are billable and payable. However, 52310 is now bundled into 52332, and you can never unbundle it. Therefore, bill only 52332.
