Urology Coding Alert

Reader Question:

Interstitial Cystitis

Question: How should we code for cystoscopy with dilation for interstitial cystitis followed by Chlorpactin instillation?

New York Subscriber
Answer: Use 52260 (cystourethroscopy, with dilation of bladder for interstitial cystitis; general or conduction [spinal] anesthesia), and 51700* (bladder irrigation, simple, lavage and/or instillation) for the instillation. Link it to diagnosis code 595.1 (chronic interstitial cystitis). There is no code for Chlorpactin, but use J3490 (unclassified drugs). Dont forget to include the diagnosis on the claim because there will be no payment without the diagnosis. Code J1212 is for DMSO, a commonly used drug for this procedure.
