Reader Question:

Pre-and Postvoid Sonograms

Question: Should we bill for both pre- and postvoid studies on the same date for bladder sonograms?

Connecticut Subscriber

Answer: Sonogram determinations of postvoid residual urine may be made during a prevoid as well as a postvoid study. However, only code once for the determination. For Medicare in the office, use G0050 (measurement of post-voiding residual urine and/or bladder capacity by ultrasound). For Medicare in the hospital, and for private and HMO payers, use 76775 (... limited).

However, following radiological guidelines, one may code 76775 for the prevoid study, and 76775-76 (... limited; repeat procedure by same physician) for the postvoid study. Send an explanation and documentation with the claim for medical review and medical proof of necessity. However, most carriers will pay for only one code.
