READER QUESTION:

Remember Cysto Code With Barbotage

Question: My urologist performed a bladder barbotage. How should I report this procedure?

Answer: When your urologist notes the he or she performed a bladder barbotage to obtain fluid for bladder cytological studies, you should report code 51700 (Bladder irrigation, simple, lavage and/or installation). Most often, urologists perform this procedure to enhance the sensitivity of the specimen for cytological examination.

In addition: If the urologist performs the bladder barbotage following a cystoscopic exam, you should report both services. First, report 52000 (Cystourethroscopy [separate procedure]) for the cystoscopic exam. Then, report 51700 for the barbotage. Append modifier 59 (Distinct procedural service) to indicate to your payer that the two procedures were separately identifiable and you should be paid for both.
