Understand What French Whistle Tip Ureteral Stents Are

Question: My physician says he put in ureteral stents for another physician during a diverticulitis surgery. My physician said these were French whistle tip stents. Am I correct that these are not indwelling ureteral stents and I should report 52005 (Cystourethroscopy, with ureteral catheterization, with or without irrigation, instillation, or ureteropyelography, exclusive of radiologic service) and not 52332 (Cystourethroscopy, with insertion of indwelling ureteral stent (eg, Gibbons or double-J type))? I’m just not familiar with the name of these stents.

Answer: The whistle tip stents are ureteral catheters, not JJ stents, and the placement of these prior to surgery should be billed with 52005 for bilateral stents for Medicare. For non-Medicare carriers, bill 52005-50 (Bilateral procedure) for the placement of bilateral ureteral catheters.
