đź‘‹ Thank you in advance for your time and attention!

I have a question for a specific scenario regarding fluids:

I have an "Ascites" fluid specimen, and the pathologist has a statement "A Wright smear, a Thinprep and cell block perparation were evaluated", I know that the thinprep is included in the 88112 CPT code, but what about the Wright smear? Can I code 88313 for it?
Would it be coded as:
88112 "thinprep,evaluation,interpretation"
88305 "cell block"
88313 "wright smear/stain"

I know that we don't code the Wright smear on Bone Marrow specimens because I read it is like the "H&E" for BM, but I don't find anything regarding cytology specimens.

Your input and experience is very much appreciated. Again, thank you for your time. 🙏

Hello Lupita1983,
I have reviewed the information and the APF Pathology Manual with you billing all three charges if documentation supports it.
I do not have access to the pathology report, only what you provided.
If you reviewed the APF manual, have all the qualifying factors to support it, then just bill it.
Thank you for listening,
Dana

Yes TGRAY,
You are absolutely accurate. The pathology report does not state exactly why the Wright smear was evaluated. No mention of why it was performed or any mention of positive or negative results. I would have not billed it. That is exactly why I stated, "if documentation supports it to bill it". The full pathology report may not be represented here. Possibly additional comments or notes to refer to or even an addendum in progress.
Have a fantastic evening,
Dana
