Arthrogram and Closed Reduction

Question: Our anesthesiologist provided general anesthesia for a patient who had a closed reduction elbow fracture with an arthrogram of the elbow. The surgeon will only be coding for the closed reduction. For which procedure should we code?

Answer: When more than one procedure is involved, anesthesiologists can bill for the higher base unit procedure. In this case, document that the arthrogram was done and use 01922 (anesthesia for non-invasive imaging or radiation therapy) with seven base units.
