Reader Question:

Crosswalk for New Code 52343

Question: CPT 2001 includes a new code, 52343 (cystourethroscopy; with treatment of intra-renal stricture [e.g., balloon dilation, laser, electrocautery, and incision]). What is the corresponding anesthesia code, and how many units are assigned to it?

Answer: CPT 2001 includes new codes 52341-52355, which are all related to cystourethroscopy. When these codes were added, codes 52335-52340 were deleted. The new codes, which basically have the same value as procedures reported with the old codes, expand on the series and bring CPT up-to-date with current procedures. This makes 00910 (anesthesia for transurethral procedures [including urethrocystoscopy]; not otherwise specified) the most appropriate corresponding anesthesia code for your situation. It has a three-unit base value.
