Anesthesia Coding Alert

Reader Question:

Bone Growth Stimulator

Question: Which codes should you use for bone growth stimulator insertion and removal?

Anonymous Colo. Subscriber

Answer: This could be billed one of two ways, depending on the situation. One would be to use 20975 (electrical stimulation to aid bone healing; invasive [operative]) for insertion; bill the removal as an unlisted orthopedic procedure for the area where the stimulator was placed and submit it with the operative notes. The other would be to use 20974 (electrical stimulation to aid bone healing; noninvasive [nonoperative]); bill the removal with a global anesthesia code.
