Use This Chart and Never Get Your Cardiac Device Evaluations Confused Again

Break down the number of days between billing for the cardiac device evaluation codes.

The case: Your cardiologist performs remote monitoring of the patient’s wireless pulmonary artery pressure sensor. Additionally, each week, for 30 days, the cardiologist downloads the artery pressure recordings, interpretations, trend analysis, and report, and he also performs a review of the results.

The solution: Based upon the documentation, in this situation, you would report remote monitoring of a wireless pulmonary artery pressure sensor code 93264. Important: Based upon the CPT® guidelines, you should report 93264 only once per 30 days.

When you report implantable and wearable cardiac device evaluations, you must wade through twenty- four options in the CPT® manual. Use the following chart as a handy resource to help you choose the appropriate code for your particular situation quickly and efficiently.

Don’t forget: You should only report these cardiac device evaluation codes when the physician and/or employee (EP RN, PA, NP, ARNP, etc.) of the physician personally provide the service, says Christina Neighbors, MA, CPC, CCC, Coding Quality Auditor for Conifer Health Solutions, Coding Quality & Education Department, and member of AAPC’s Certified Cardiology Coder steering committee. If the facility RN or device representative provides this service, the physician cannot report a procedure for their services. The physician does not employ the facility staff and/or the device representative.
