Reader Question:

Ace Coding Abdominal Pacemaker Placement

Question: Is there a separate group of codes for pacemakers placed abdominally instead of through upper veins?

Answer: No, you should use the same pacemaker codes you use for pacemaker placement through superior vessels. For instance, for a dual chamber pacemaker system insertion, including transvenous electrodes, you would report 33208 (Insertion of new or replacement of permanent pacemaker with transvenous electrode[s]; atrial and ventricular).

Keep in mind that 33208 and other pacemaker codes include related radiological supervision and interpretation, so you should not report it separately when the provider uses it to guide the insertion.
