Cardiology Coding Alert

Reader Question:

Clinical Trial Number Alternative Available

Question: I’ve been hearing different things about the clinical trial number requirements on Medicare claims. What’s the rule?

California Subscriber

Answer: If you are able to report the clinical trial number on your Medicare claim, you must do so. When reporting a clinical trial claim, report the 8-digit clinical trial registry number preceded by CT in Field 19 of the paper Form CMS-1500. For an electronic claim, put the clinical trial number, without CT, in Loop 2300 REF02 (REF01=P4).

Medicare has provided an alternative for providers and suppliers who are unable to report the number. Those providers may report 99999999. Dec. 31, 2014, is the latest that number will be allowed, but CMS wants providers/suppliers to update their processing procedures as soon as possible to be able to report the correct number.
