Know Which Codes Can’t Be Reported Together

Question: My provider performed a duplex ultrasound scan of the patient’s lower extremity arteries on both sides. They performed this procedure to examine the rate of blood flow and to assess the presence of blockage in the lower extremity arteries. Which code should I report for this procedure?

Answer: You should report 93925 (Duplex scan of lower extremity arteries or arterial bypass grafts; complete bilateral study) on your claim.

Caution: Never report 93925 in conjunction with 93985 (Duplex scan of arterial inflow and venous outflow for preoperative vessel assessment prior to creation of hemodialysis access; complete bilateral study) for the same extremities.

Code 93925 describes evaluation of the arteries from the groin downward, per the CPT® guidelines.
