"CMS never actually clarified that the correction of erroneous payments was mandatory and, in fact, many hospices did not have the information available to make the correction," notes The Health Group in Morgantown, West Virginia, in its electronic newsletter. "Now that the time has passed to submit a list of the claims to be corrected, the question arises regarding whether any overpayments ... need to be submitted with credit balance reporting." "If no information is forthcoming from the MACs or CMS regarding this matter, we recommend that hospices take it upon themselves to make inquiry to their respective MAC regarding this matter," the consulting firm says. Hospices should also ID incorrect payments by reviewing remittances and include them in their respective receivable records, according to the newsletter. Then it's up to you to decide "what course of action" to take about the over- or underpayments.
