Question: What is the CPT code for radiofrequency ablation of the greater occipital nerve? Pennsylvania Subscriber Answer: Radiofrequency is considered by the AMA to be one of the acceptable means for neurolytic destruction. In the CPT code book, AMA separates out the nerve destruction codes into two sections: somatic nerves and sympathetic nerves. The greater occipital nerve is primarily a sensory nerve and as such is classified as a somatic nerve. In review of the various CPT codes for somatic nerve destruction, there is no CPT code description that specifically names the Greater occipital nerve. However, coders have somewhat of a "break" in that there is a CPT code that is in essence a "catch-all" code in the somatic nerve destruction section that fits this procedure: 64640 (Destruction by neurolytic agent; other peripheral nerve or branch).
