Ob-Gyn Coding Alert

Correction:

Cord Blood Collection Code

Cord Blood, appearing in Ob-Gyn Coding Alert December 2001, suggests that there is no code to report collection of cord blood.

In fact, HCPCS introduced S2140 (Cord blood harvesting for transplantation, allogenic) in 2001 for this purpose. Like other S codes, S2140 was developed for Blue Cross/Blue Shield programs.

While Medicare and some private carriers do not accept these codes, Patti Kidd, billing specialist for Beal and Costantino, P.C., in Tucson, Ariz., reports having received payment for S2140 when submitted to some carriers.

S codes will be part of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act universal code set and approved for widespread use once the set is enacted in October 2003.
