ICD-10:

Update Your MMK-Related Diagnoses This Fall

You’ll have an easy transition with these codes.

During the Marshall-Marchetti-Krantz (MMK) procedure, the surgeon places sutures into the vaginal wall at the level of the urethra and bladder neck and anchors them to the pubic bone. Possible diagnoses for MMK procedures include stress incontinence (625.6), vaginal prolapse (618.x) and mixed incontinence (788.33). When ICD-10 goes into effect on Oct. 1, 2015 you will need to update your coding for these conditions.

Under ICD-9, you would choose one of the following codes, based on your uro/gynecologist’s diagnosis notes:

  • Stress incontinence: 625.6, Stress incontinence female
  • Vaginal prolapse: 618.x, Genital prolapse (Note: You will need a fourth, and sometimes a fifth, digit for these diagnosis codes.)
  • Mixed incontinence: 788.33, Mixed incontinence (male) (female)

With ICD-10, you’ll instead report one of the following:

  • Stress incontinence: N39.3, Stress incontinence (female) (male)
  • Vaginal prolapse: N81.1-, Female genital prolapse, cystocele (Note: You will need a fourth, and sometimes a fifth, digit for these diagnosis codes, as indicated by the dash.)
  • Mixed incontinence: N39.46, Mixed incontinence.
