Reader Question:

Amniotic Fluid Check

Question: What is the diagnosis code for an amniotic fluid check? The patients previous diagnosis was oligohydramnios, confirmed by ultrasound. The most recent ultrasound revealed that the fluid level is normal.

Wisconsin Subscriber

Answer: Since you performed the test because the patient had oligohydramnios, you should use that diagnosis (658.0, oligohydramnios). Some coding purists might disagree because there was no problem at the end of the encounter. But you had a good reason for ordering the test and should be reimbursed for it. Your only other coding option is V28.8 (other specified antenatal screening).
