Reader Question:

Here's Why N78.8 is the Old Dx for Couple's Infertility Diagnosis

Question: What diagnosis code should I use for an office visit where a patient and her husband cannot get pregnant due to the husband’s oligospermia? Should I be using N97.8?

Answer: Prior to 10/01/15, you would have reported N97.8 (Female infertility of other origin). The rationale for this was that it is a “couple” diagnosis, so this code would have been appropriate. However, in 2015, ICD-10 added a new code (Z31.81, Encounter for male factor infertility in female patient). So this would now be the correct one to report for this visit.
