Reader Question:

Terminated Pregnancy

Question: The patient had a dilation and evacuation (D&E) for an anencephalic fetus at 14 weeks. The condition was desired termination secondary to maternal indication of right ovarian thrombosis currently on anticoagulation. Which diagnosis codes apply for the D&E?

Florida Subscriber
Answer: Your primary code will be 635.9x (legally induced abortion, without mention of complication), assuming there is no complication as a result of the abortion. Add 655.00 (central nervous system malformation in fetus; unspecified as to episode of care or not applicable) to cover the fetal problem. This will be considered not applicable to the episode of care since you are not delivering the baby. Use 59841 (induced abortion, by dilation and evacuation) to report the D&E at 14 weeks.
