READER QUESTIONS:

Avoid Canceling Out With ICD-9 Codes

Question: Can I report the following CPT and ICD-9 codes together?

58262 with 618.3
57265 with 618.01, 618.04 and 618.5
57283 with 618.00
51010 with 788.21.

Answer: You can bill all of these CPT codes together, but you have a problem with the diagnoses.

You cannot use 618.3 (Uterovaginal prolapse, complete) and 618.5 (Prolapse of vaginal vault after hysterectomy) along with 618.0x (Prolapse of vaginal walls without mention of uterine prolapse) because these codes cancel each other out.

If the patient has a uterine and vaginal wall prolapse (618.3 and 618.5), you cannot also use codes that tell the payer that she does not have a uterine wall prolapse (618.0x).
