Contraception Not Working? Try V25.2

Question: What is the diagnosis code for uncontrolled contraception? I am thinking of using V26.51 for voluntary sterilization surgery.

Answer: If the patient has had a previous tubal ligation, you should report V26.51 (Tubal ligation status). However, the term "uncontrolled contraception" does not have much meaning without more information. If she had been trying other birth-control methods that were not working and wanted a tubal ligation, the code would be V25.2 (Sterilization) instead.
