Ob-Gyn Coding Alert

READER QUESTIONS:

Pinpoint Insulin Resistance for Non-Pregnant Patients

Question: My ob-gyn diagnosed "insulin resistance." What ICD-9 code should I use for this? South Dakota Subscriber Answer: First, you should determine if this is a pregnant patient or not. Insulin resistance for a non-pregnant patient is 277.7 (Dysmetabolic syndrome X). If the patient is pregnant, then you can report either 648.9x  (Other current conditions classifiable elsewhere) or 648.8x (Abnormal glucose tolerance). Your secondary code would then be 277.7.
