Ob-Gyn Coding Alert

Reader Questions:

See V Codes for CMV

Question: We have a patient who had a fetal demise and we are testing her for CMV. What diagnosis code should I use?

New Hampshire Subscriber
Answer: CMV stands for "cytomegalovirus." Before coding, keep in mind that the patient may not have the condition your ob-gyn is screening for, so don't give her the condition before it is confirmed.

If she is not now pregnant, you would use V73.89 (Special screening examination for viral and chlamydial diseases; other specified viral diseases). If she is pregnant, you should go with V28.8 (Antenatal screening; other specified antenatal screening).
