Ophthalmology and Optometry Coding Alert

Reader Question:

Pachymetry

Question: How do you determine the procedure code and appropriate charges for pachymetry when done for LASIK and glaucoma patients?

Washington Subscriber

Answer: Pachymetry, a procedure to measure the thickness of the cornea, does not have its own CPT code. To bill the service you will need to use the unlisted code, 92499 (unlisted ophthalmological service or procedure) with a description of the service. Pachymetry is not billable to Medicare. It is considered to be included in the office visit. When billing pachymetry to other insurance plans, note that they usually require a report attached to the claim explaining the procedure.
