Reader Question:

DME Excludes Voice Prosthesis

Question: Our physician replaced the voice prosthesis for a patient. We ordered the prosthetic device for the patient and inserted it. If the patient pays us for the device can we bill MCR Part B L8509 for the device? Is it considered DME? We are not DME providers. Nevada SubscriberAnswer: Medicare took out the voice prosthesis from the DME list in October 2010, and put on the regular Medicare fee. So billing your Medicare provider, you will get paid about $95-$100, which won't even cover your cost. Make sure to bill code 92597 (Evaluation for use and/or fitting of voice prosthetic device to supplement oral speech) with it.
