Calculate Global Periods With Ease

Question: How do I find out the global periods for CPT® codes 28111 and 28810?

Minnesota Subscriber

Answer: Because both 28111 (Ostectomy, complete excision; first metatarsal head) and 28810 (Amputation, metatarsal, with toe, single) are considered major surgery, they each have a global period of 90 days with one day of preoperative allowance. This means you count one day immediately before the day of surgery (preoperative), the day of surgery (intra-operative), and then 90 days immediately following the date of surgery (postoperative).

You can easily figure out the global period and when it will end without having to count individual days on a calendar. Many offices now use software with global period calculators built in. You can also access global period information on payer websites.

For example, Palmetto GBA offers two different options of global period calculation. Option 1: You simply enter the date of surgery, then a date picker box will help guide you through the rest of the process. Or option 2: Enter the date of service and the procedure code and go from there.
