The provider measures macular pigment optical density (MPOD), or attenuation of blue light, using heterochromic flicker photometry (HFP) to determine the amount of lutein and zeaxanthin in macular pigment in one or both eyes. Lutein and zeaxanthin are thought to play a protective role against age–related macular degeneration and cataract. This code covers the procedure itself as well as interpretation and report.
