Summary

In this procedure, the provider surgically creates a shunt between the descending aorta and the pulmonary artery. A shunt forms the bypass channel or passageway in the blood circulation connecting two blood vessels and diverts blood from one region to the other. The aim of this procedure is to improve oxygenation of the blood in a patient with cyanosis from insufficient pulmonary blood flow due to a congenital heart defect.  This procedure is also known as Potts Smith type operation.
