There are multiple reasons that colon resection might be required including cancer, other diseases of the colon, necrosis from entrapped bowel, and trauma. The surgeon makes an abdominal incision and removes the entire colon and rectum. The rectal mucosa may be removed. The end of the small bowel is attached to the anus. The ileum is folded into an "S" or a "J" to create a reservoir.
