Summary

The provider removes part of the rectum and resects some of the mucosa that lines the remaining rectum. He also performs an ileoanal anastomosis, i.e., joins the ileum to the anus, and creates an ileal reservoir or pouch. He may or may not perform a loop ileostomy. which brings loop of ileum out through the abdominal wall to divert waste material into an external bag. He performs this procedure to treat Crohn colitis or cancer of the rectum.
