Summary

In this procedure, the provider removes an ileoanal reservoir and creates an ileostomy, where he diverts the ileum, or the terminal portion of the small intestine, out through an opening in the abdomen. An ileoanal reservoir is an internal pouch made up of the small intestine in patients after removal of their colon. This reservoir acts as a storage place for stool in the absence of a colon. The stored stool then expels out of the anus several times during the day.
