In the traditional procedure of parathyroid exploration, the provider surgically visualizes and screens the parathyroid glands for pathology based on their appearance and relative size. He may then perform parathyroidectomy, which is surgical removal of one or more parathyroid glands as indicated. The glands are a set of four small glands situated on the rear of the four corners of the butterfly shaped thyroid gland.
